Education Programs - Central Zone

Our programs are designed to support employees who are starting or transitioning into new practice settings or roles through acquisition and application of knowledge and skills. Our programs are designed and facilitated by members of our team using adult learning methods and principles and drawing on evidence and best practices.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE ORIENTATION

This session introduces regulated health care professionals to overarching principles, concepts and resources that support an understanding of professional practice within NSH; regardless of designation, geographical location, or practice setting they will be working within. The goal is to welcome and socialize these individuals to professional practice within the organization.
Professional Practice Orientation is followed by a point of care/unit-based preceptorship and the development of the new employee learning and development plan with the Health Service Manager (HSM), Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE)/Professional Practice Coordinator (PPC), in addition to other clinical leaders and is meant to align and complement the above components to support your area’s transition to practice of new health professionals.

Dates:
Professional Practice Orientation occurs on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month.
Registration is completed following the completion of People Services hiring process.


MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING ORIENTATION

This is an evidence-based and learner-centred program designed to support newly hired nurses on medical-surgical units in Central Zone with acquiring and applying knowledge and skills. The Medical-Surgical Nursing Orientation Program is intended as an adjunct. It is not a replacement for unit-specific orientation and transition to practice plans.

SKIN AND WOUND - LEVEL 1

Participants will develop foundational knowledge and skills to increase competency in basic skin and wound management practices through self-directed and in person learning. The session incorporates hands-on skill building and simulation learning.

SKIN AND WOUND - LEVEL 2

Learn about specific wound etiology, including Prevention and management of skin tears and moisture associated skin damage, surgical wounds, as well as application and management of negative pressure wound therapy. GRAD NURSE FOLLOW-UP

We recognize the challenges new graduate nurses face as they navigate their transition from student to practitioner. The Graduate Nurse Follow-Up session offers an opportunity for novice nurses to enhance their clinical preparation, consolidate theory with clinical skills, and engage in peer learning and support. The program design includes active learning strategies, exploration of available resources, and reflective practice.

INTERPROFESSIONAL PRECEPTOR - 101 BEGINNING WITH THE BASICS

Preceptors play an integral role in supporting transition to practice of health care providers.  This online half day session provides opportunities to develop skills and approaches to precepting in an interactive and multi-disciplinary learning environment.  This 4-hour virtual session explores 'Beginning With Basic' concepts and approaches to being a preceptor. This session is targeted for staff of all disciplines new to precepting, or who have no formal training in becoming a preceptor.

INTERPROFESSIONAL PRECEPTOR - FOUNDATIONS

Preceptors play an integral role in supporting transition to practice of health care providers.  This in-person one day session provides opportunities to develop skills and approaches to precepting in an interactive and multi-disciplinary learning environment. Skilled preceptors play a key role in collaboration with unit Clinical Leadership Teams (HSMs, CNE/PPC, charge nurses/team leads) in onboarding and integrating new staff into practice environments.

CLINICAL LEADERSHIP FOUNDATIONS

This is a two- day in person clinical leadership development program for clinical/point of care leaders (e.g., supervisors, charge nurses, team leads etc.) who hold a leadership role and accountabilities for practice and care in clinical environments.

CARDIAC RHYTHEM INTERPRETATION

This session is for Registered Nurses who work in practice areas with telemetry monitoring. It covers fundamental concepts such as identifying normal and abnormal heart rhythms, understanding ECG waves, and recognizing lethal rhythms. Nurses will learn to interpret cardiac monitoring and how to respond appropriately to critical situations. This session offers hands-on practice following self-directed learning requirements.

Registration: Completed by Health Service Manager/Clinical Nurse Educator by emailing ipplczprograms@nshealth.ca. NOTE: This session is available only to clinical areas which require Registered Nurses to perform telemetry monitoring to care for their patient population.

CCA ORIENTATION

CCA Orientation focuses on the translation of knowledge from prior educational preparation to practice within Nova Scotia Health policies, procedures, and practices. CCA orientation is for all CCAs or CTAs hired to Nova Scotia Health, in Central Zone. Upon completing this orientation, participants are expected to:
- Be able to summarize key principles of promoting skin integrity and pressure injury prevention within the scope of a CCA at Nova Scotia Health
- Be able to articulate quality & patient safety initiatives at Nova Scotia Health within the scope of the CCA
- Be able to articulate the roles and responsibilities of a CCA in documentation within Nova Scotia Health

CCA orientation can be completed at any point within the first 12 months of hire, however, it is preferred that attendance occur within the first 3-6 month.
